Music at Redeemer seeks to remind us of the beauties of the Lord and express our deepest emotions: joy and praise, sadness and anger, love and gratitude, fear and hope. We sing because we believe God is the greatest hero and joy the world has ever known. He is mighty enough to receive cosmic praise, and tender enough to handle our most fragile whimpers and hurts.

Prayer of Confession

Before you begin, remember that the Father already extends his forgiveness and smiling love through Jesus. There is nothing left to earn. All that remains is to receive.

Lord of all,

you have set both your love

and your redemption on all things—

from humanity to animal life,

from plants to human culture—

not one atom in the universe

sits outside of your redeeming plan.

Forgive us for neglecting to care for

and cultivate your world well.

This prayer helps us bring the most shame-filled parts of our hearts and lives to Jesus. Although God already knows everything about us, when we confess to him our wrong, we experience afresh his unending forgiveness and welcome.

Assurance of Grace

based on I Peter 2:24

Lift your heads and your hearts and receive this good news:

Jesus himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin,  and alive to all that is good.  Know that through Christ, you are forgiven.

May the God of all grace settle you in a place of belonging, give you opportunity to bring forth beauty, and enable you to bear fruit for His Kingdom. Amen.

The assurance is a powerful reminder that God always has grace for the wayward. He never leaves us in our sin. For all who trust in Jesus, this grace is assuredly and undoubtedly yours. Sin is not powerful enough to sway God’s love and grace for you.

Who are the people you are prone to imitate (whether good and bad)? How have you imitated them and what came from it?

Why do you think that—in the kindness of Jesus—he instructs us to imitate those who are more mature than ourselves?

Reflection

Take an extended time to prayerfully ponder and apply this passage. If you’re with others, share your responses together. Feel free to journal or draw your thoughts and emotions.

Consider how you interpret God’s love and favor. Do you perceive he loves you more when things are going well in your life or when you have done a “good job” at being a Christian? Do you believe he loves you unconditionally even when you have disdain for yourself or when you can’t see past the pressures and pains that fill your days?
Take a moment and REST in the good news of vv. 8-9. Jesus gives you his righteousness out of what he accomplished; you do not have to “achieve” it. Spent a few moments thanking God for this good news, asking him to help grow you to REST in his gracious love.
Consider what “achievements” you banner before God. In prayer, repent of the “achievements” that you think impress God. Rest in his grace that greets you in your repentance (1 John 1:9).

Hearing God’s Word

Jeremiah 29:1-11

These are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders of the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. This was after King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the eunuchs, the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metal workers had departed from Jerusalem. The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. It said:

“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream, for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, declares the Lord. Reflective Prayer

Before prayer, take a moment to consider the tensions v. 13 creates for you. Does it bring comfort and hope to know that God is working in you through his good will and good pleasure? Does it create confusion when the “good will and good pleasure” of God don’t result in things looking the way you’d hope?
In prayer, bring the tensions of v. 13 to God. Ask him to help grow your trust when his “good will and good pleasure” don’t align with your longings. Thank God for his ability to see beyond the current moments that capture our focus.
Ask God to lead you to creatively and courageously embody the grace that he has worked into you. Pray for one specific way you can embody the love of God to a neighbor or friend.

Before you begin, remember that the Father already extends his forgiveness and smiling love through Jesus. There is nothing left to earn. All that remains is to receive.

Heavenly Father,

You are the river of all joy,

and the fountain of all delight.

The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. What then?
